Released September 2004 441 New Levels for Apple Lode Runner – The RemakeHi all you Apple Lode Runner fans, Spoonbill Software is proud to announce an additional four level map sets compiled especially for Spoonbill’s Apple Lode Runner – The Remake program. They have been assembled by our resident Lode Runner guru Fred Pence from various sources. The four additional level map sets come packaged together and are available upon request. Please request Apple Lode Runner Bonus Pack 1. You will need to already have Apple Lode Runner – The Remake to play them. If you do not already have Apple Lode Runner – The Remake, please request that instead. The new setup file for Apple Lode Runner – The Remake comes complete with these four new level map sets. The Bonus Pack contains the following four level map sets (the comments are by Fred Pence): Quickies (150 levels) - these screens are from a diskette from Japan that had about 40-50 screens called Checkmate; I finished out the 150 in that set and then later developed another 150 I called Quickies. Quickies are exactly what their name suggests small levels which can be completed quickly. Typically each Quickie level explores only one or two of the techniques required to solve more complex Lode Runner levels and are ideal for those new to Lode Runner or for those of you who want to hone your skills. Hyper Lode Runner (80 levels) are the screens from the Nintendo Game Boy. The bonus screens that are in the level map set are actually secondary levels you enter after obtaining a key on the primary level. I got the screens from a booklet a fellow in Tokyo sent me. It's in Japanese so I could only go by the pictures and layout diagrams. CGW Contest (61 levels) screens are the submitted entries to Computer Gaming World magazine. They called it a contest but I never saw any results from it. I asked the publishers for a diskette with them on it. LR Pics (150
levels) When I started I just thought I'd put together pictures
from the various disks I had acquired but then found I had plenty of mine
to fill the 150 screens (just a habit from the old format). Only a
couple of people here have them, but I did send them to Japan where
Yamamoto added them to the International Lode Runner Exchange Bureau (he
and I were the only members, I think.). I have no idea how widely
they were spread.

Spoonbill Software's Cribbage game has just received a complete new makeover thanks to Steve Watkins who found several bugs with the previous version. He played it to death long into the night and got it to crash in several situations including when Large Fonts were set. Since this game has not been revisited since it was written in 1997, rather than delve into the code and try to patch the existing version, I decided to completely rewrite the game to give a fresh new look and playability. Cribbage 2.0 now uses Direct-X for animation of the card movements, has optional background music, an option to turn off the score breakdown boxes which some of my users found annoying and several other improvements. I also noticed in the process of rewriting that although I touched on one or two of the rules of Cribbage in the on-line help, I'd forgotten to include the full rules for those people who have never played before. So this has been corrected in the new help. If you enjoyed the original Cribbage, or even if you've never played it, you'll love Cribbage 2.0.
Released July 2004 (1.4 MB)
Apple Lode Runner - The Remake was suggested by Fred Pence who in his younger days back in the early 1980s was an avid fan of the original Apple II game by Doug Smith. Here's the Spoonbill Software version. For those of you who are not familiar with this game, it is an action / puzzle game combining quick reactions with logical reasoning. You progress from level to level by collecting the treasure chests and avoiding the guards. Your only defence, apart from your quick wits, is a laser pistol which you can use to dig holes to temporarily trap the guards. When you have collected all the treasure chests on a level, you must climb to the top of the level before proceeding to the next level. Some levels are more action than puzzle, whilst others are more puzzle than action. The 150 levels which came with the original Apple game are here, plus the 50 levels from the later Championship Lode Runner and a bonus set of 150 levels by the Lode Runner master, Fred Pence himself. In addition, you can save a game and resume the game later, record your achievements in the High Scores table, design your own levels, and organize levels which you have created by rearranging them or deleting unwanted ones. There are lots more goodies. Why not request a copy of the game and see for yourself. After all, it's completely FREE! |
